Why militia attacks against the United States have escalated in Iraq

Dr. Mohamed Abbas Nagy, an expert at the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, said in an exclusive comment to the Arab Wall website that the escalation of missile attacks launched by some Iraqi militias loyal to Iran near the American embassy in Iraq, such as the July 29 attack, is an attempt by Iran to convey certain messages to the United States. This is given the US is a major player in Iraq, where the missile attacks coincided with the return of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi from the United States, after reaching an agreement with US President Joe Biden on scheduling the US military withdrawal and ending the combat missions of US forces while continuing their advisory and logistical tasks. The missile attacks also came following US strikes on the July 19 against a Popular Mobilization Forces convoy on the Syrian-Iraqi border.

Nagy, who specializes in Iranian affairs, explained that Iran is adopting a dual policy regarding the continuous escalation against American interests in Iraq. On the one hand, Iran attempts to distance itself from the entities carrying out the attacks, while also acknowledging that these strikes strengthen its position and disrupt other parties’ strategies, like the US or the Iraqi government.
